A POEM ON BREAST CANCER
For the World Breast Cancer awareness month:
FLIPPED SCRIPTS
With every new day comes a new experience
And with the rising of the sun comes a reminder that our lives are books being flipped page after page by our consciousness
Today a new chapter begins with the awareness that even after planning how you would spend the rest of your life, the scripts could be flipped on you at any time.
My neighbor, Yvonne is a social bird and a sweetheart at her core
She dresses in radiant colors and walks in swanky gait
Everyone in the neighborhood loved her, I admired her
She was not the prettiest or wealthiest but her aura sets her apart
One day, she approached me and asked
“Boy, can you dance in the rain even when your tears are enough to baptize you”?
I laughed and replied “I think heavens’ tears will make ours feel accepted”
The next day I noticed the radiance of Yvonne went sour
She waved at me as we made eye contact but her smile felt oddly foreign
I approached her and she said
“Boy, before you say a word, I want you to understand that there is a lump in my left breast and yes, I have been diagnosed of Breast Cancer. So what will become of me? My electric aura and my bouncy vibe.
When did I become so evil to deserve this knock on my existence?”
She broke down in tears and in reflex I embraced her with a heavy heart and sweaty cold hands
“Oh Yvonne, your tears are heavier than any rain I have ever witnessed”
She laughed. I didn’t understand how she could, but I mean, it’s Yvonne.
It is painful to admit that I witnessed my happy neighbor go through a painful experience
Constant treatment and periodic radiotherapy
My heart ached even more particularly for her family
Is it easy to watch your favorite flower wither in your very eyes despite your countless attempt to find a remedy?
The side effect from the treatment, the nausea, the hair loss, and the fatigue. Overwhelming.
Yvonne might have crumbled under the weight from the mental depression that comes with the ailment
But she didn’t sit in the ash for too long
She somehow managed to cope through the situation and stay positive as much as she could
More like she believed in the metaphoric light at the end of the tunnel
Her family and friends were a huge booster to her self-efficacy and if rainbows really represented hope then Yvonne could be considered a rainbow poster lady
My neighbor Yvonne went on to eventually beat cancer thanks to early diagnosis and strict follow up of treatment.
She stands today a survivor and an advocate for women battling with Breast cancer
The sun rose in the sky again today just to remind us that our life is a script and every morning is a finger that flips it.
This is yet again another beautiful piece.... Keep it up.
